Yes, Sherry. There’s no easy answer, and this is certainly a problem no one of us can address alone. Besides donating to groups better able to leverage and target what I give, my one-on-one experiences are more often food than cash. I’ll never forget a family trip to Montreal where — on their own — my sons (middle school age at the time) decided to buy an extra sandwich for a homeless man outside of the restaurant. They’ve never forgotten the gratitude expressed and the feeling it generated in them. I was/am so proud!
