Sherry, I read your article last night and again this morning. I know these stories, and I too have cried while reading and viewing the accompanying images. As you pointed out, the people who left those callous Facebook responses demonstrated no signs of empathy. The world is never just binary, but here’s my take:

These people are compensating for their own shortcomings —analogous to Trump compensating for his insecurity by being a bully,

OR

They are so afraid their idyllic lives will be disturbed by those different from them that they won’t/can’t acknowledge their plight — also a fear Trump, Fox News, and right-wing talk radio stoke at every opportunity.

How surprised those same people, who call themselves Christians, will be when they leave this earth and Saint Peter is not the one manning the gates they’re about to walk through. Or if you believe in karma and reincarnation, they’ll reenter as brown people in a South American country.
