Allan, I’d rather respond with something satirical or humorous, but …
As many parallels as exist between Jefferson and Trump, he’s really the ultimate “carpetbagger.” Like the Northerners who moved to the South after the Civil War during Reconstruction, he has taken his false message often to the poor and undereducated for his personal financial and political gain.
“Scalawags” were white Southerners who cooperated politically with black freedmen and Northern newcomers, and analogously today, these are Trump’s cabinet members and GOP senators and congressmen who are overtly or silently complicit as together they take advantage of middle Americans.
From his use of eminent domain as a real estate developer to his fraudulent Trump University to his bribery of public officials to avoid lawsuits to his now indisputable racism, he’s a carpetbagger. Often included in his lies are references to himself in the superlative. As a carpetbagger, he may indeed have few equals.
By the way, he didn’t fire Bannon, he freed the ultimate scalawag to work on his behalf without the shackles of the White House.
